Men's Hoops Falls to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - Kidus Getenet led four Austin College men's basketball players in double figures with 22 points, but Schreiner used a big second half to pull away and hand the 'Roos an 83-75 defeat on Saturday in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

It was a game of runs in the first half, with the 'Roos jumping on top 7-2 and holding a 12-7 lead before Schreiner used a 20-2 run to make it 27-14 with 8:50 left to play. The Mountaineers had a 31-20 lead with 6:14 left, but Austin College started to chip away at the margin and pulled to within one at 34-33 with just over two minutes remaining before the break. A three from Getenet pushed Austin College back on top 38-37, and the teams would end up heading into halftime all square at 40-40.

The two teams traded baskets to start the second half and Austin College took a 50-48 lead on a basket by Tristan Dick with 15:47 remaining, but a 9-2 run for Schreiner put the Mountaineers ahead 57-52 with 14 minutes left in the game. Schreiner pushed the margin to double digits at 66-56 four minutes later, and the deficit grew to 79-64 with 3:22 on the clock. The 'Roos got the margin down to six points on a pair of Joshua Joe free throws to make it 79-73 with 1:20 left, but that's as close as things would get and the Mountaineers managed to hold off the late comeback bid.

Getenet made 6-of-17 shots to get his 22 points and added four rebounds and two assists, and Dick finished with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Joe chipped in 12 points, five assists, and five steals, and Ethan Pearce scored 11 while tying for the team lead with six rebounds. Christian Caldwell came off the bench to lead Schreiner with 16 points, and Kamden Ross had 13 points and 11 boards for the Mountaineers.
