SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College football team came out strong defensively early, but some big plays on special teams and defense led to an early 14-0 lead for Sul Ross and the 'Roos were unable to make up that ground on their way to a 49-7 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Apple Stadium. The 'Roos are now 1-4 overall on the year.

Austin College limited Sul Ross to just 16 yards of offense in the opening quarter, but a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown by Vicent Luevano put the Lobos up 7-0 with just over two minutes left in the opening frame and a 33-yard interception return by Quincy Blair set Sul Ross up inside the 'Roo 10-yard line early in the second, with Andrew Martinez scoring from eight yards out to make it 14-0 just seven seconds into the quarter. The margin would grow to 21-0 later in the quarter as Rod Hudson scored from a yard out, but the 'Roos got on the board with 3:12 left before halftime on a 27-yard touchdown throw from Jaylon Talton to Grant Yudizky.

However, the Lobos would strike once more before halftime, this time on a six yard scoring run from Martinez with 14 seconds left to make it a 28-7 game at the break. Sul Ross opened the second half with a 13-play, 65-yard drive that ate up the first six minutes of the third quarter and culminated in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to make it 35-7, and in the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Cyrin Myles found paydirt from five yards out to make it 42-7 with 6:30 left in the game. The Lobos added their final score on a touchdown throw by Myles with 18 seconds left to make it 49-7 at the final whistle.

Talton finished the game completing 12-of-25 passes for 122 yards with a touchdown and a pick, adding 30 yards on the ground. Colin Mushinski caught four passes for 26 yards and also averaged better than 30 yards on kick returns, including a long of 54 yards. Colton Gerken had nine tackles and Brady Dygert added eight in the loss. Martinez paced Sul Ross offensively, completing 12-of-19 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown while adding 65 yards and two scores on the ground. Jade Rios had nine tackles to lead the Lobos defensively.
