Southwestern Tops 'Roos in Extras

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker against Southwestern University on Monday, falling 9-8 on a walk-off hit by the Pirates, who were playing as the home team at Baker Field due to the game having originally been scheduled to be played in Georgetown.

Southwestern got on the board with a run in the first and added another in the second to make it a 2-0 game, but the 'Roos erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to go on top 5-2. Logan Ballard got things gonig with an RBI single, and Brandon Hill cleared the bases with a double to make it 4-2. Hill would later score on an error for the team's fifth run of the inning.

The Austin College lead grew to 6-2 in the fifth when Ballard drew a walk with the bases full, but the Pirates put up a five-run inning of their own in the bottom half of the frame to go ahead 7-6. Greg Smith quickly gave the edge back to the 'Roos in the top of the sixth, hitting a 2-run single to make it 8-7, but Southwestern was able to even things up in the bottom of the eighth and the score would remain knotted to force extra innings.

Neither team was able to generate any runs in the first two and a half innings of extras, but in the bottom of the 12th, Landon Durdin ripped a line drive into right that fell in for a base hit and brought across the winning run for the Pirates. Trevor Deupree got the loss for Austin College, giving up one run on four hits in 3.1 innings of relief work, while Ryan Corbett got the win after pitching a perfect inning in the 12th. Branson Vrazel went 3-for-6 to pace Austin College offensively, while Preston Witt went 2-for-5 with three RBI for Southwestern.
