SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team exploded for 17 runs and picked up its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win of the season on Sunday, topping Schreiner 17-7 at Baker Field.

It didn't take long for Austin College to take control, as the 'Roos erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding lead. Jake Trapani got the scoring started with an RBI double, and Asher Thompson and Mason Woodhouse followed with run-scoring singles. Tyler Ward brought home another run with a sacrifice fly, and Greg Smith plated another run to make it 5-0. An error opened the door for the team's sixth run of the frame, and Brandon Hill belted a 2-run double to make it 8-0 before Trapani trippled to plate Hill and make it 9-0.

Schreiner got one run back in the second and another came across in the fourth, with the Mountaineers pulling to within four runs at 9-5 in the top of the sixth. However, the 'Roos got three more runs across in the bottom half of the inning to make it 12-5, with Smith, Tripp Thoms, and Hill each driving in a run. Ward blasted a 2-run homer in the seventh to make it 14-5, and after Schreiner got two more runs in the top of the eighth to make it a 14-7 game Austin College got a bases-clearing double by Thompson to make it a 17-7 game and end things via the mercy rule.

Justin Lambright got the win for Austin College, giving up our runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work, and Trapani came up just shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a single, a double, and a triple. Thompson went 4-for-5 with four RBI, and Ward was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the win. Devin Hooper took the loss for Schreiner after giving up even runs - five earned - on five hits without recording an out in the first inning.
