Schreiner Takes Two From 'Roo Baseball

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped both halves of its SCAC doubleheader against Schreiner University on Saturday afternoon at Baker Field, falling 10-5 in game one before being edged 4-2 in game two.

In game one, the Mountaineers used a four-run second inning to jump out to an early lead, and after Jake Trapani hit a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning, Schreiner extended the lead to 5-1 in the third. The 'Roos would get an RBI single from Branson Vrazel in the third and a run-scoring hit from Tripp Thoms to make it 5-3 in the fourth, but the Mountaineers opened things up with four more runs in the seventh to make it a 9-3 game.

Vrazel scored on a wild pitch in the seventh before Schreiner added its final run of the game to make it 10-4, and the 'Roos would come up short in the ninth, with Brandon Hill coming home on a wild pitch to make it a 10-5 final score. Trystan Mallory took the loss for the 'Roos, surrendering seven runs - six earned - on 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Trapani went 2-for-4 with two runs to pace the 'Roos at the plate. Tyler Juarez went 3-for-5 with a homer to lead Schreiner offensively.

The Mountaineers once again took an early lead in game two, pushing two runs across in the second before Chrystian Kyser drove in a run to make it a 2-1 game in the fourth. Schreiner scored a run in the fifth and one more in the seventh to make it 4-1, with Kyser closing the gap with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. However, that would be the final run of the game as the 'Roos were unable to mount a late inning comeback.

Garrett Gray went the distance on the mound for Austin College, giving up four runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts and a walk in a complete game performance. Kyser went 2-for-3 for the 'Roos, who were limited to four hits as a team. Gerardo Cardoza went 3-for-5 to lead the Mountaineers, and Fito Mendez got the win after giving up one run on three hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
