Women's Water Polo Grabs Split on Opening Day of Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's water polo team grabbed a split on Saturday on the first day of the 2023 Bronco Invitational at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Broncos dominated Austin (Texas) College in the afternoon after falling to No. 20 Brown, 14-6, in the morning.

The Broncos jumped all over the No. 8-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country (CWPA poll), with 12 different players scoring goals. Santa Clara already led 5-1 after the first and held a 9-3 halftime lead. The Broncos blanked the 'Roos in the second half, outscoring them, 4-0.

Kate Rodman and Lauren Voss were the multi-goal scorers for Santa Clara, putting in two each. Natalie Brauser, Magen Chambliss, Harper Daniels, Mila Erceg, Sophia Harvey, Chloe Morrison, Steph Nelson, Halley Seed and Avary Torres all scored single goals in the game.

Maddie Clough tallied a team-high three assists. Torres had two and Voss also had two. Francesca Moynihan and Rodman both led the Broncos with two steals each.

Liyara Senadheera made 18 stops in net, only allowing three goals all game.

vs. No. 20 BROWN

The Broncos (3-5) stayed close to the No. 20-ranked Bears in the first half, only trailing 6-3 at halftime. Santa Clara scored twice in the second period and once in the first, while Brown scored three goals in each of the first two opening frames.

The Bears created some distance in the third, outscoring Santa Clara, 5-1. The Broncos picked up two more goals in the fourth and final period to give them six for the game.

Chloe Morrison led Santa Clara with three goals against No. 20 Brown. Lauren Baglietto, Maddie Clough and Elle Fredrickson each scored one goal. Georgia Lewis made eight stops in goal for the Broncos.

COMING UP

The Broncos conclude their own 2023 Bronco Invitational with two more games on Sunday. They face Marist at 8:30 a.m., then take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:40 p.m. in a rematch from the season opener. Fans can find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
