Celts Split Doubleheader with Austin College

Celts Split Doubleheader with Austin College

UST split their double-header with Austin College in day one of their three game series. It took the Celts a while to get the offense going in game one, but a late barrage of runs resulted in an 11-6 victory as they scored their last nine runs in the sixth inning or later.

Leo Galvan began the scoring for the Celts and would tie the game up at one after a solo HR to left field in the second inning. Galvan would also score in the fourth inning as a result of a sac-fly courtesy of Mitchell Gross. The 'Roos followed by scoring four runs of their own in the top of the 5th, taking a 5-2 lead. The top of the six inning began with yet another run from Galvan batted in by Gross, which was immediately followed up by a three-run HR by Noah Martinez. The Celts continued their streak of runs in the next frame after Galvan collected his second RBI of the day, batting in Jason Brown. With the bases loaded in the top of the 8th and St. Thomas in position to head into the final stretch of the game with a comfortable lead, their only run of the inning would result from John Sebok being hit by a pitch. After a one-run eighth inning, the 'Roos closed the gap. With the score being 8-6, the Celts added a few insurance runs with a Noah Martinez sac-fly and a 2-RBI single from Caleb Edmonds

Game two of the double-header was a nailbiter, as the 'Roos would squeak out a 7-6 victory.

The Celts made their mark early in this one, scoring first on a double steal which sent Kyle Bearden home for the first run of the game. Hunter Pachal then batted in another run with an RBI single. UST would collect another run on the play due to an error by the 'Roos. After a few runs from Austin College tied the game three, St. Thomas would once again take the lead on Hunter Pachal's second RBI of the game. But they could not get any separation as the 'Roos immediately tied it up once again. Another error and double steal brought the Celts lead to two runs heading into the bottom of the 7th, but Austin College would tack on one run in each of their final three opportunities and walk away with the win.

Game three of the series will be played Sunday afternoon at 12:00 PM.
