'Roo Women Fall Short Against Sul Ross

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College women's soccer team struck first but three straight goals by Sul Ross led to a 3-2 defeat for the 'Roos on Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Jack R. Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex. The 'Roos are now 0-2 to open the year.

Madi Galvan netted her first career goal in the fourth minute of action on an assist from Maddie Klem, and the score remained 1-0 until just after the 25-minute mark, when Emily Mihilak evened things up. Sul Ross would head into halftime leading 2-1 after Marli Martin's goal in the 38th minute.

The Lobos extended their lead in the 65th minute on a tally by Haley Gillespie, but Austin College pulled to within one shortly after when Catalina Canizalez chipped a shot past the Sul Ross keeper and the ball rolled past the goal line for Canizalez's second score in as many games. However, that's as close as things would get, and the Lobos would hold on for the win.

Sul Ross had a 20-8 shot advantage in the game, with Maya Erwin making four saves and Meredith Harris making three for the 'Roos. Taylor Higgins saved two shots for Sul Ross.

Austin College is back in action on Thursday night as they play host to East Texas Baptist at 6:00 p.m.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
