Women's Hoops Drops Season Opener

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team led visiting Rhodes College for most of Friday night's season opener, but the Lynx used a big fourth quarter to surge past the 'Roos 50-45 in Hughey Gym.

Austin College shot just 23.9% from the field, and after shooting less than 10% for most of the game, the Lynx hit 8-of-13 fourth quarter shots as they outscored the 'Roos 19-10 in the period. The 'Roos led 14-10 after the opening frame and limited Rhodes to just five second quarter points, taking a 24-15 lead into halftime. Rhodes hit just 2-of-9 shots in the third quarter, but got to the free throw line 15 times, making 11 of those attempts, to close the gap to 35-31 entering the final quarter of play.

Rhodes scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to square things up, and after Lauren Traylor knocked down a jumper to put Austin College back on top 37-35, Catherine Althoff converted a three-point-play to put the Lynx ahead 38-37 with 7:28 left to play. Althoff scored again to make it 40-37 with 6:34 on the clock, and it would be more than two minutes before either team got on the scoreboard again, with Sarah Putnicki making two free throws to cut it to 40-39.

The Lynx pushed their lead to 45-39 before a triple by Kaylee Lewis cut it to 45-42 with 3:02 to play, but the 'Roos would be unable to get the margin under three the rest of the way, with Sammi Guffey knocking down a three to make it 48-45 with 49 seconds left. Rhodes would add one more basket from Giana Vlahakos, and Austin College would fail to get another shot attempt in the game's closing seconds.

Sarah Gwin hit 5-of-21 shot attempts to finish with 11 points, and Traylor made 5-of-11 on her way to 10. Both Gwin and Traylor also grabbed five rebounds. Putnicki hit 3-of-12 shot attempts to add 10 points and six rebounds, while Naomi Anamekwe led the 'Roos with eight rebounds. Alexys Mathangani paced Rhodes with 15 points and 11 boards.
