'Roo Women Fall to TLU in SCAC Semis

The Austin College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Texas Lutheran in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals, falling 63-59 in Georgetown. The 'Roos finish the year with an overall record of 19-8, the program's best mark since winning 20 games in 1998-99.

The 'Roos got out to a fast start, with a three from Ann Savage making it a 12-6 lead for Austin College with 3:40 left in the opening quarter. However, Texas Lutheran would use a 22-5 run spanning into the second quarter to go on top 28-17 with 5:39 left before halftime. The 'Roos battled back to within five on a bucket by Bryce Frank, but two free throws for the Bulldogs would give TLU a 30-23 halftime lead.

The 'Roos came storming back in the third quarter, with Meghan Lewis scoring seven points as Austin College outscored the Bulldogs 22-11 in the frame. The 'Roos would take a 45-41 lead into the fourth quarter, but TLU scored eight in a row to open the final period to go ahead 49-41.

A driving bucket by Caitlyn Collins squared things once again at 52-52 with 4:49 left to play, and after Texas Lutheran pushed the margin to 59-54 with under two minutes to play, Collins buried a triple to trim it to a 59-57 margin with 57 seconds remaining.

Texas Lutheran would knock down two free throws to make it a 61-57 game before Frank scored to cut the deficit to two points with five seconds left, but Austin College would be denied an opportunity to force overtime, as TLU's Bailey Champion knocked down a pair of free thows to seal the game.

Frank finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, her 10th consecutive double-double, in the loss. Collins added 11 points off the bench, while Lewis had nine points and five steals. Kendall Heitmeier added nine points and eight rebounds as Austin College was limited to just 5-of-19 shooting from three point range, while Texas Lutheran was 8-of-20 from long distance.
