SHERMAN, Texas - Austin College softball and women's basketball player Carrie Johnson has been selected for a Native American Journalism Association Fellowship, as she pursues her goals of working in journalism and broadcasting in the future.

Johnson, who lives in Sherman, was a second team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference performer for the 'Roo softball team and also a key reserve for the Austin College women's basketball program after transferring in from Southeastern Oklahoma University. The rising junior has been participating in the program this summer and later this month will attend the National Native Media Conference in Arizona.

The conference will take place from August 22-28, with Johnson working on media and journalism pieces along with her fellow interns. Johnson is one of just seven students to have been selected for the 2022 Native American Journalism Association Fellowship. The fellowship provides an "opportunity for students to deepen and broaden their reporting and multimedia skills, while learning from tribal journalists and news industry professionals from across the country," as detailed by the Native American Journalism Fellowship's website. Following her time at Austin College, Johnson plans to continue her goal of working in the field of journalism by attending graduate school with that pursuit in mind.
