'Roo Softball Splits with Staten Island

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Monday, falling 1-0 in a pitchers duel in game one before bouncing back with a 6-0 win in game two. The 'Roos are now 6-6 overall this season.

In game one, defense prevailed through the first five innings with neither team able to get anything going at the plate. In the top of the sixth, however, Staten Island put one run across on an error to go ahead 1-0 and that's all it would take for the Dolphins to hand the 'Roos the loss.

Briana Hernandez went 2-for-3 as the 'Roos were limited to four hits in the game. Tori Herrera took the loss, surrendering an unearned run on just three hits in 5.1 innings of work with seven strikeouts against zero walks.

Austin College plated three runs in the second inning of game two to go ahead 3-0, with Sophia Hernandez singling home a run to get things started, and Mary Whitworth and Raquel Vara each knocking in an RBI in the inning. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth when Vara doubled home a run and Kierra Gaither brought home Whitworth, and the final run was plated in the sixth on an RBI single by Kylee Fowler.

Sophia Hernandez went the distance to earn the shutout victory, surrendering just three hits while striking out five batters against one walk. Vara went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Fowler went 2-for-3 and drove in one run in the victory.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
