Softball Drops Pair to No. 13 Texas Lutheran

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team dropped each of its two games against No. 13-ranked Texas Lutheran University on Saturday, falling 10-1 in game one and 9-0 in game two to fall to 5-5 overall and 0-4 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Texas Lutheran jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first in game one, with Taylor Yancey doubling home a pair of runs in the inning, before the 'Roos got one back in the second to cut it to a 3-1 game. Sophia Hernandez picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly for what would prove to be Austin College's only run of the game.

A three run homer for TLU in the third made it 6-1, and two more came across in the fourth. A Jennifer Gallagher two-run double in the fifth made it a 10-1 final in a game shortened by the run rule.

Katherine Wright took the loss, surrendering eight runs – only four earned – on nine hits in 3.0 innings of work. Raquel Vara, Emily Low, and Jaylin Clevenger each had a hit as the 'Roos were limited to just three hits in the game.

The second game was scoreless into the top of the fourth, when a dropped third strike and an error opened the door to a six run inning for the Bulldogs to make it 6-0. Three more runs came home in the fifth for the Bulldogs to extend the margin to 9-0, and that's how things would end in the second run-shortened game of the doubleheader.

Tori Herrera took the loss, giving up six runs – two earned – on seven hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Vara went 2-for-3 to pace Austin College on offense.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
