Softball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep Over Rust

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team was dominant on both offense and defense as the 'Roos topped Rust College by scores of 13-1 and 14-0, and Tori Herrera tossed just the second no-hitter in program history in the second game. The 'Roos are now 5-1 overall this season with the wins.

In game one, the 'Roos jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after the first, with Lauren Mara singling home two runs while Raquel Vara and Sophia Hernandez each belted an RBI triple in the frame. The lead grew to 7-0 in the second when Vara came home on an error, and Sophia Hernandez's two-run homer highlighted a three run third to make it 10-0.

Three more runs came across in the fourth, with Felicia Rivera knocking in two runs with a double to make it 13-0 before Rust finally managed to plate a run in the top of the fifth to make it a 13-1 final after the mercy rule was invoked.

Sophia Hernandez went 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the 'Roos, while Vara and Rivera each went 2-for-3. Hernandez also got the win, striking out eight batters and allowing no runs and only two hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Herrera was dominant from the start in game two and the 'Roos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first, giving the junior right-hander more run support than she'd need the rest of the way. Herrera struck out 12 batters, just missing a perfect game by walking one and hitting one batter while going the distance in another 5-inning victory shortened by the mercy rule.

Vara went 3-for-4 with four RBI, doubling twice in the win. Kylee Fowler went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and Delaney England went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Briana Hernandez, Mary Whitworth, and Kierra Gaither each collected two hits in the win.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
