'Roos Top PSB, Fall to Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Austin College men's water polo team cruised to victory against Penn State Behrend in the opening game of the MPSF Championship Tournament on Saturday, winning 19-8, before falling 24-5 against host school Stanford University.

Austin College jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the first quarter against PSB, with Cade Griffith and Nik Koelzer getting things started early to make it 2-0. Koelzer tallied again to make it a 3-1 game, and Robert Griffin tallied twice and Andrew Pope found the back of the cage once to round out the opening quarter scoring. The second quarter didn't see much action offensively, as both teams managed to score twice to make it 8-5 at halftime, but the 'Roos dominated the third and fourth quarters to pull away and earn their third win over Penn State Behrend this season.

After PSB cut it to an 8-6 game early in the third, Austin College scored four unanswered to make it 12-6, and the 'Roos would head into the fourth quarter leading 13-7. Austin College outscored Behrend 6-1 in the final frame to put the game away, including scoring the final four goals of the game. Griffin finished with five goals for Austin College, and Koelzer and Griffith each scored three times. Dylan McArthur found the net twice in the victory.

In the second game of the day against Division I opponent Stanford, Max Wade scored early on to make it a 1-1 game before the Cardinal started pulling away, pushing the margin to 5-1 before an Andrew Galt goal. Stanford would finish the quarter leading 8-2. The lead would grow to 11-2 before a tally from Connor Watson made it an eight goal deficit, and Kyle Brown followed with a goal of his own to make it 11-4. Stanford scored three straight to end the half, however, making it a 14-4 game at the break.

Stanford used a 7-0 third quarter to seal the game, with Griffith finding the back of the cage late in the fourth quarter for Austin College's final score of the game.

The 'Roos wrap up the weekend in the 5th/6th place game, taking on Penn State Behrend again tomorrow with game time set for 1:15 p.m. Central.
