'Roos Drop Two at D3 Eastern Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Austin College men's water polo team fell in each of its two games on Saturday at the Division III Eastern Championships, dropping the first game to MIT 22-10 before being edged 12-11 by Connecticut College.

The 'Roos kept things tight early, getting goals from Robert Griffin and Alex Rodriguez to trail 3-2, but MIT scored twice before the end of the quarter to make it a 5-2 game after one. The margin grew to 8-2 before Nico Masso tallied to make it 8-3, but MIT would score two more to push it to a 10-3 game. Andrew Pope and Connor Watson each scored to make it 11-5 at halftime.

MIT pushed the lead to 13-5 early in the third before goals from Eric Brown and Griffin made it 13-7. Once again, though, MIT scored two goals of their own to make it 15-7. Brett Skinner and Kyle Brown each scored to make it a 16-9 game heading into the fourth quarter. MIT out-scored Austin College 6-1 in the fourth to put the game away, with Braden Sullivan getting the lone goal for the 'Roos. 

Against Connecticut College, the 'Roos jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter behind three goals from Rodriguez. However, the 'Roos were blanked in the second quarter and Connecticut College took a 6-3 lead into halftime. The lead grew to 9-3 before Griffin scored once and Watson found the net twice to make it a 9-6 game. Duran Kittman and Sullivan each scored in the fourth to cut it to a 10-8 margin before two more goals for Connecticut College to push it back to a four goal deficit. 

The 'Roos would mount a late comeback, getting two goals from Skinner and one more from Sullivan but the rally would fall just short. Rodriguez had three goals to lead the way while Watson, Skinner, and Sullivan each had two. Andrew Pomier had nine saves in goal
