PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Austin College football team committed five turnovers and the 'Roos were unable to overcome those giveaways in a 24-14 loss at Wayland Baptist on Saturday. The 'Roos are now 0-2 to open the year.

Colt Collins was intercepted on the first play from scrimmage and that set the tone for Austin College, as the 'Roos had four of their five turnovers in the opening quarter, including three picks and a fumbled punt return brought back for a touchdown for WBU. That score, plus an earlier field goal, put Wayland Baptist ahead 10-0 heading into the second quarter. The score remained 10-0 until the third quarter, when Collins found Kaleeb Garner for an 18-yard touchdown strike to pull within three, but WBU answered back a few minutes later to make it a 17-7 game.

Collins rushed four yards for a touchdown with 13:04 remaining in the fourth to pull Austin College to within a field goal at 17-14, but that's as close as the 'Roos would get. With seven seconds left in the game, WBU sealed it when they took a fourth and 16 from inside the redzone and got a 17-yard touchdown run with a second remaining, making it a 24-14 final.

Collins finished 15-of-43 for 170 yards and added 32 yards on the ground to lead Austin College offensively, while Trey Carr caught seven passes for 74 yards. The 'Roos were limited to 206 yards of offense. Morris Shell, Drake Sanders, and Connor Carnes each had eight tackles to lead the defense, while Sanders had 3.0 tackles-for-loss including 1.5 sacks, and Shell had 2.5 tackles-for-loss.

Wayland Baptist quarterback Nick Quintero completed 10-of-16 passes for 152 yards and De'Sean Jackson rushed 12 times for 44 yards and the clinching touchdown.

Austin College is on the road again next weekend as they open up Southern Athletic Association play at Sewanee on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
