Tigers Edge Austin College in SCAC Opener

Box Score Sophomore midfielder Samson Heyer struck for his first collegiate goal as the Colorado College men's soccer team kicked off its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 1-0 victory at Austin College on Friday night.

Heyer dribbled at an Austin defender near the right corner of the 18-yard box, and then cut on his left foot and fired a low shot just inside the near post.

That was the only goal the Tigers needed thanks to another impressive performance by their defense and junior goalkeeper Keller Mochel.

"Our defensive effort was outstanding," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Had we been a bit sharper at the other end of the field, we might have scored another goal or two."

CC allowed only nine total shots, only two of which made it through to Mochel. He stopped a shot by Juan Ramirez 33 minutes into the game and wasn't tested again until the 61st minute when he denied a shot off the boot of Philip Le.

The clean sheet was the second of the season for Mochel and the fifth of his career.

"Tonight's victory was a complete team effort and a gritty performance," Palguta said. "We finally watched a team that was very difficult to play against, something we have been harping on since Day 1 of preseason."

Colorado College finished with a 12-9 edge in total shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Joseph Khalaf stopped four for the 'Roos, who slipped to 1-1-1 overall.

The Tigers, who improved to 2-1-0 overall, wrap up their two-game trip to Texas on Sunday afternoon at the University of Dallas.
