Celts earn weekend split with 2-0 win over Austin College

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas earned a split for the final weekend of non-conference play Sunday by defeating Austin College 2-0.

UST had started the weekend with a 4-2 setback to the University of Dallas on Friday.

In Sunday's win over the visiting Kangaroos, Carlos Marquez (SR/El Paso, Texas) gave the Celts an early lead in the 17th minute when he recovered his own rebound off a blocked penalty kick and put the second-chance effort past the goalkeeper. It was Marquez' fourth goal of the season.

The Celts stretched their lead to 2-0 shortly past the hour mark when Tom Hultsch (JR/Luneburg, Germany) was in the right place to strike home his first goal of the season off a corner kick from teammate Fabrizio Policastro (FR/Houston, Texas).

Though the Kangaroos were within striking distance for the duration of the match, UST drastically limited their offensive chances. By the end of the match, the Celts had outshot Austin College 25-5, and also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Pedro Medrano (SO/Houston, Texas) made three saves in goal for the Celts en route to his first shutout of the season.

In Friday's loss to UDallas, the visiting Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and then stretched their advantage to three goals less than a minute after the restart. Marquez put the Celts on the board in the 62nd minute.

UST pulled to within a goal at 3-2 when Heiko Leinweber (SR/Cottbus, Germany) knocked home a long shot from 35 yards out in 73rd minute.

The Celts open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Friday, Oct. 4, when they host Colorado College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
