AC Athletics Update 2/22/2019

Forgive the delay of this week’s Update, #RooNation, but with inclement weather threatening this weekend’s competitions (stop me when you have heard this before), we wanted to update you when we had concrete schedule changes to report.

While our Spring Sports have been struggling to get on the field and courts, our Swimming & Diving Teams finished up their Conference Championships in historic fashion, our Men’s Basketball Team closed out their 2018-19 season on the road, and our Women’s Basketball Team prepares for the Conference Tournament in Seguin.

Let’s get to the recap and preview the games still scheduled to be played.  It’s the AC Athletics Update.

Distance Track

Our ‘Roo Runners have been working as hard (if not harder) than anyone to get their practices in this year with all the precipitation we have had to start their season.  But their first meet is on the horizon at Hardin-Simmons this weekend.  Safe travels to Abilene for @ACRoosXCTrack, and please use the same handle for social media updates throughout the meet.

Women’s Basketball

Congratulations to our 2018-19 Women’s Basketball Team!  The Kangaroos locked up a first-round bye in the Conference Tournament by going 13-3 on the season in SCAC Play.

The opponent they will face in the semi-finals will be decided today as (#3) TLU and (#6) Schreiner face off in the first round for the right to play our ‘Roos.  The winner advances to the championships on Sunday.

Good luck to all of the seniors that have been preparing for this opportunity for 4 years, and good luck to Coach Filander who works tirelessly to put our Student-Athletes in a position to be successful both on and off the hardwood.

Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving

What a weekend for Austin College in the pool at the Conference Championships!  The Men’s and Women’s teams finished fifth in the standings, and longstanding records fell in several events for our KangaroosChris Brown took home the Gold Medal in the 100 Backstroke; the first Gold Medal in any event for Austin College in Men’s program history.  Colton Baker earned a sixth place finish in the 1-meter diving competition.  Lexi Wong set a new program record in the 100 breaststroke.  And the team of Sofie Garriga, Chloe Hunt, Brooke Le, and Wong broke an 18-year-old school record in the 400 medley relay.

Congratulations to all of the Kangaroo Swimmers and Divers on a great season, and to Head Coach Bob Filander who always finds a way to prepare our Student-Athletes for their best performances at the end of every season.

Men’s Basketball

The Kangaroos Men’s Basketball Team closed out their season on the road, dropping a 3-point thriller to Southwestern in Georgetown, TX.

Congratulations to AC and Head Coach Rodney Wecker on a great season where we saw our win total double from the 17-18 campaign.

A young roster and competitive results point to an exciting 2019-2020 campaign, so we can’t wait to see our Roundballers back on the court in just a few months’ time.

Baseball / Softball

While our Diamond Cutters have had several games cancelled due to inclement weather early this season, they have been working hard to showcase their talents when the opportunity presents itself.  Keep these programs in your thoughts as we hope that clear skies and warmer weather are on the horizon so the ‘Roos can take on the SCAC for a chance to compete in the Conference Championships this season.

The next games on the schedule are for Baseball, travelling to Arlington Baptist on Monday, February 25th, and hosting Dallas Christian at home on Tuesday, February 26thSoftball will plan to open their slate of SCAC home games on Saturday, March 9th against Trinity at 12:00PM.  May fair winds and clear skies set the scene for you throughout the weeks ahead, AC.

Women’s Water Polo

Looking ahead on the schedule, AC will open their inaugural Women’s Water Polo season NEXT weekend on the road in Springfield, Ohio.  Our Kangaroos will take on the likes of Macalester, host Wittenberg, Carthage, and Monmouth on the weekend.  We will update you with start times, social media handles, and possible video links next week, but stay alert as we close in on the start of this historic event.
