SPINGFIELD, Ohio - The Austin College women's water polo team wrapped up the first weekend of varsity competition in program history on Sunday, topping Carthage 15-3 before being edged by Monmouth College 14-12. The 'Roos are now 2-2 on the year.

The 'Roos were dominant against Carthage, particularly in the second half, as they picked up their second win of the weekend on Sunday morning. Austin College took a 5-2 lead into halftime and then took full control in the third and fourth quarters, out-scoring Carthage 10-1 after the break. Lexi Wong scored five goals and Presley Woods added four to pace the 'Roos, while Valery Piachonkina made 15 saves in the net.

Austin College fell behind 5-1 early against Monmouth before battling back to pull to within one goal at 7-6 after two quarters, and after Monmouth once again extended their lead to four goals late, the 'Roos continued to battle back. Austin College scored with under 20 seconds to play to cut it to a 14-12 game but that's as close as they would get down the stretch. Wong and Brooke Le each scored three goals, while Woods and Shannon Berry had two goals apiece. Piachonkina had nine blocks in the loss.

For the weekend, Wong paced Austin College with 13 goals in four games, while Woods and Le each had eight and Madison Taylor had seven. Piachonkina totaled 47 blocks to help the 'Roos go 2-2.
