Women's Tennis Performs Well at ITA Southwest Regionals

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - Women's Tennis closed out their fall season with one of the best showings in Austin College ITA Regional participation in Division III program history.

Melody Duong, seeded fourth in A-Singles, made an historic run to the semi-finals before falling to the eventual champion from ETBU 6-4, 6-3.  Duong defeated players from Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, and Trinity along the way; advancing 2 rounds further than her 2017 tournament.

Diana Carvajalino, seeded fifth, fought valiantly in a super-tiebreaker for the 3rd set, but fell 13-11 to a player from UT-Dallas after defeating last year's top player from Schreiner.  Anna Sergiovanni, also seeded fifth, fell in back to back matches.  Her quarter of the draw included the eventual singles champion, and the consolation champion.

Kirsten Weber competed in her final ITA Regional Tournament of her career, falling in back to back matches, but competing well in the consolation Round of 16 against a veteran player from Southwestern.

Every competitor in B singles won their first match of the day, with Katie Seibert falling 6-4, 6-2 to the eventual finalist, Georgia Moore falling 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual champion, and Chandler Morris making it to day 2 before bowing out against a tough competitor from Trinity.

Brenna McCown also won her first match in C singles before falling to the eventual champion from Texas Lutheran University.

Doubles Competition would show two AC Teams into the Round of 16, and one team into the Quarterfinals as Weber/Sergiovanni defeated the presumed #1 Team from McMurry 9-8 (7-5).  The tandem would fall to the eventual finalists from UT-Dallas in a hard fought 8-6 match.

Carvajalino & Duong, seeded third, received a bye into the Round of 16, and defeated the top Schreiner Team 8-6 before falling 8-6 to a Trinity Team that would finish 3rd overall.

Seibert & Moore lost a close 8-6 decision to Hardin-Simmons in their first round, and fell on Day 2 after receiving a bye to McMurry 8-6 after jumping out to a 4-1 lead.

The only team in the B-Doubles competition for Austin College was McCown and Morris, who won a close 9-7 match over Schreiner in the Round of 16 before giving the 1-seed from Hardin Simmons all they could handle in an 8-6 defeat.

AC finished with a record of 12-15, but had one of the toughest strength of schedules of the tournament, as their collective opponents compiled a record of 48-29, championships in A-singles, B-Singles, and B Consolation Singles, and runner-up appearances in A consolation singles, B-Singles and C-Singles.

This concludes Women's Tennis's fall season, and they will turn their eyes on the Spring as they try to improve on their 3rd-place finish in the SCAC Tournament, and their year-end #12 West Region team ranking.
