Kangaroos Upset West #12 George Fox Indoors
Singles play saves ‘Roos after falling behind 1-2
BEAVERTON, Ore. - A thrilling finish to a competitive match was the narrative about the West Region matchup between #12 George Fox University and #15 Austin College in Women's Tennis.
A new doubles lineup for Austin College led to the 'Roos falling behind 1-2 going into singles competition. But Melody Duong and Diana Carvajalino kept the deficit to just 1 with a dominant 8-3 victory at line 1.
AC would take a quick and commanding lead through the first three matches of singles with Carvajalino and Sergiovanni winning 6-1, 6-1 at lines 2 and 3. Grace Ortiz would push the 'Roos to 4 points with her 6-2, 6-1 victory at line 4, but the match would get tight from that point foreward.
George Fox took line 1 in a third set over Duong 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and then line 6 over McCown 6-1, 6-1. The match would come down to first-year Chandler Morris at line 5, up a set 6-3.
Morris would battle back and forth with her Bruin counterpart, forcing a second set tiebreaker that was even at the first change-of-ends. But 4-straight points would clinch the upset for Austin College as the 'Roos continue to move up the regional rankings with each match.
AC travels to Portland for nationally-ranked matchup with #33 Lewis & Clark College later today at 4:00pm.
