Heroic Effort Falls Short Against McMurry

SHERMAN, Tex. - With several members of the roster out for various reasons, the active members of the Austin College Women's Tennis Team put forth an effort worthy of an Kangaroo Student-Athlete in a 5-4 loss to McMurry University.

Kirsten Weber and Grace Ortiz doubled up their win total for the weekend, coming from behind 7-4 to win 9-8(5) at Line 1 Doubles.  Meanwhile, Brenna McCown stepped up to pair with Anna Sergiovanni for a victory at the Line 3 position.  With the two doubles victories, the 'Roos found themselves ahead 2-1 going into singles competition.

Anna Sergiovanni earned a great win at Line 2 singles in a lengthy 6-1, 6-4 result.  With each rally averaging more than fifteen shots, the matchup between the Warhawk and Kangaroo players was much more competitive than the score would indicate.

McCown fought deep into the first set in her return to Line 6 singles, but found herself unable to keep her opponent from painting the lines as McMurry would clinch the team victory from that position.

With a 5-3 victory well in hand, the 'Roos could easily have wrapped up the remaining singles match and spend extra time preparing for their afternoon competition.  But Kate Willis was determined to capture the final match of the day.  Serving a bomb on match point, Willis took a third-set super tiebreaker to cement a 5-4 team defeat, but a meaningful one at that.

Austin College returns for their Senior Day match-up against LeTourneau University at 3:00pm today.
