SHERMAN, Tex. – After suffering a 5-4 defeat to Texas Wesleyan in their home opener yesterday, the Austin College Women's Tennis Team bounced back in a big way, defeating UT-Dallas 5-4 in an exciting "down-to-the-last-match" victory.
Dropping all 3 doubles matches the day before, getting a doubles victory was incredibly important for the Kangaroo Women's Tennis Team. They managed to find a win in doubles competition from Anamariia Kheveli and Carlye Lide at Line 3, defeating UTD 8-2.
The other doubles tandems would fall, but singles would once again prove to be the Kangaroo's strength.
Anamariia Kheveli continued her success at Line 5 singles with a "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 to level the match for Austin College. Katie Seibert fell at Line 3 soon after, but Lide fought back from a 2-5 first set deficit to win 7-5, 6-3 and tie the match once more at 3-3.
Grace Ortiz would break the tie to send the 'Roos up 4-3 with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory at Line 4, and Kirsten Weber would fight valiantly in the set against the 9th-ranked Kathy Joseph at Line 1, but would fall 6-1, 6-4.
All eyes turned to freshman Anna Sergiovanni, playing a match-clinching opportunity at Line 2 singles against Top-25 regionally ranked Sumvruta Iyengar. Sergiovanni cruised to a 6-2, 5-2 lead, but the sophomore from UT-Dallas would not throw in the towel, leveling the second set at 5-5 and 6-6.
UT-Dallas would start the second set tiebreaker up 5-2, but Sergiovanni would win 5-straight points to earn her first "clinch" 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), earning the 5-4 victory for Austin College.
The Kangaroos return to the court on the road against Centenary College and East Texas Baptist University, Saturday, February 18th at 9am in Shreveport, LA and 2pm in Marshall, TX.
