SHERMAN, TX – The Austin College Women's Tennis Team returned home rested and ready to compete against the visiting University of the Southwest (NM) at the end of their spring break.
Weather was largely uncooperative for the start of the match, but coaches and players, determined not to let the opportunity to compete wash away, worked from before sunrise until well after the 9:00am start time to get the courts playable. This was just enough time for the 'Roos to build a lead over the Mustangs, but not enough to permit a decision before rain set in over Sherman, TX.
Doubles competition split between the two matches as the 'Roos took a 1-0 lead with a, 8-2 win from Carlye Lide and Katie Barber at Line 2. Cierra White and Kate Willis fought back from behind two breaks of serve on the first doubles court. A hold at 6-7 would have tied the match, but the Mustangs returned well and took the pro-set 8-6.
The temperature began to drop and dark clouds settled over the courts as singles play began, but the 'Roos jumped out to early leads over the Mustangs on all four singles courts before consistent misting made conditions unplayable. Magan Green was able to take her first set against Jessica Tovar (USW) 7-5, 1-0 as the only Kangaroo to work her way into the second half of a match.
Austin College is expected to return to the courts tomorrow at home, 3/15 at 9:00am vs. the Hendrix College Warriors.
