Austin College Women Race Past Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College women's soccer team tallied twice in the first four minutes and never looked back, downing Southwestern University 4-1 on Friday evening. The 'Roos are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the victory.

Sarah Battles got the scoring started just 99 seconds into the game, taking a pass from Hassie Wortham, and putting it past the keeper from 20 yards out for the 1-0 lead. Tori Strunk would add a goal just 4:11 into the game on a cross from Karolina Cruz, and the 'Roos would take their 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Battles got her second goal of the game in the 50th minute of action, blasting a shot over the outstretched arms of Southwestern keeper Shay Kana from 35 yards out to make it 3-0. Southwestern would get on the board in the 82nd minute on a goal by Mady Akers, but Austin College answered less than a minute later when Hassie Wortham took a feed from Erin Eckart and chipped it over Kana for her first career collegiate goal, making it a 4-1 game.

The 'Roos and Pirates were even in the shot department, with each side attempting 19 in the game. Maya Erwin made nine saves for Austin College, while Kana and Kylie Hunt combined for five saves for the Pirates.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
