Pirates Use Two Second Half Goals to Top 'Roo Women

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime but a pair of second half goals by Southwestern University led to a 2-1 loss for the 'Roos on Friday afternoon. The defeat drops the 'Roos to 2-4-1 overall this season and 1-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Ashley Rise put Austin College on the board first, beating a defender and ripping a shot into the upper left corner of the next in the 24th minute of action. The Pirates would get a chance to square things up with a first half penalty kick, but the shot ricocheted off the crossbar to keep it a one goal game heading into the break.

The score remained 1-0 until the 67th minute, when Kierstyn Luckock tallied to even things up, and the Pirates took the lead in the 74th minute of play when Sarah Bevins one-timed a long cross from Mady Akers into the back of the net. That would prove to be the game-winner, as Austin College was unable to equalize.

Laura McGee made four saves for Austin College, while Kylie Hunt had five stops for Southwestern. The Pirates held a 17-12 edge in shot attempts in the game, including 11-6 after halftime.

Austin College will be looking to rebound when they host Texas Lutheran on Sunday afternoon.
