Rice's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer into SCAC Semifinals

Ashley Rice tallied in the 83rd minute of action to break a scoreless tie and propel Austin College past Southwestern 1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Friday. Austin College improves to 11-9 overall and will take on top seeded Trinity tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. in the SCAC Semifinals.

Southwestern controlled the game through most of the first half, firing off nine shots to just two for Austin College and getting three corner kicks, compared to none for the 'Roos. However, Franchesca Lozoya made three saves in the opening frame to keep the Pirates at bay and the teams went into halftime knotted at 0-0.

The 'Roos got some offense going in the second half, taking 10 shots while Southwestern took 11, but it wasn't until the 82:27 mark that either team was able to break through with the game-winner from Rice. Lozoya and Laura McGee combined for the shutout, with Lozoya making five stops and McGree making two.
