Women's Soccer Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker

The Austin College women's soccer team held a 21-8 shot advantage, but Southwestern curled a corner kick into the net for a golden goal in overtime to hand the 'Roos a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 4-4 overall this season, and 0-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The game was scoreless until the 43rd minute of action, when Southwestern substitute Sarah Bevins finished on a pass from Carol Bentley to send the Pirates into halftime leading 1-0. That remained the score until the 60th minute of action, when Tori Strunk struck a 40 yard shot from the left wing into the upper right corner of the net for the equalizer.

Each team would have chances down the stretch, with Erin Eckart's shot sailing just high in the 86th minute, while Franchesca Lozoya made a save on a Southwestern shot in the 89th minute, but neither team was able to find the winner in regulation. After a scoreless first overtime it looked like the game would finish in a draw, but Ana Gutierrez's corner kick curled directly into the upper left corner of the net to give the Pirates the 2-1 win.

Lozoya made two saves for Austin College, while Katherine Rodgers made four stops for the Pirates.
