Women's Hoops Tops Southwestern 63-48

Meghan Lewis scored a career-best 14 points and Austin College dominated the middle two quarters after trailing in the first on their way to a 63-48 road victory at Southwestern on Friday night. The 'Roos are now 8-4 overall and 2-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 'Roos trailed 20-11 after one quarter of action as Austin College struggled to get things going early, but a dominant second quarter sent them into halftime leading 29-27. Southwestern led 23-12 with 7:07 left to play in the opening half, but Austin College would use a 17-4 run capped off by two free throws from Lewis with no time on the clock after the sophomore guard drew a foul on a halfcourt heave at the buzzer.

Caitlyn Collins hit two threes and Lewis added a trey of her own as Austin College fought back to take the lead heading into the break.

The 'Roos continued their run into the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter to make it a 27-4 run spanning the second and third periods. A three pointer for Southwestern put the Pirates on the board and made it 39-30 with 4:31 to play in the third, but Austin College would get five more points from Lewis during a 9-0 run to make it a 48-30 game with 2:03 on the clock.

Southwestern pulled to within 11 at 48-37 with a 7-0 burst of their own, but Olivia Cicci's three pointer with 17 seconds left in the quarter sent Austin College into the fourth leading 51-37. The 'Roos cruised from that point, getting the margin up to 62-41 on a Kendall Heitmeier three pointer with 5:51 left in the game before some late baskets by the Pirates made it a 63-48 final.

Lewis hit 4-of-7 shots overall and 3-of-3 from long distance to reach double-digits for the first time in her career, and Collins finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Bryce Frank and Heitmeier each chipped in nine points and nine rebounds in the victory.
