Rhodes Pulls Away from 'Roo Women's Hoops Late

The Austin College women's basketball team kept things close against No. 17-ranked Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon, but the Lynx finished the game outscoring the 'Roos 21-12 over the final 14 minutes to hand Austin College a 68-52 loss. The 'Roos are now 2-4 overall this season.

Austin College got a pair of threes from Christina Kime and Lexi Beeson to grab an early 6-4 lead, but the Lynx scored nine unanswered to make it a 13-6 game with 14:16 on the clock. Austin College answered with a pair of buckets to cut it to a three point game, but Lauren Avant scored six quick points as the Lynx pushed the lead to 23-12 with 6:40 left before the break.

The 'Roos chipped away at the Rhodes lead over the next few minutes, with a three pointer from Erin Riley cutting it a 31-25 game and after a basket by Kime, Kendall Heitmeier knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 35-30 at the break.

Rhodes scored the first four points of the second half, and after the 'Roos got three points to make it 39-33, Symone Daniels knocked down a three and Avant completed a three point play to push it to a 45-33 game with 16:07 left. A three point play by Kime cut it to 47-40 with 14:15 left in the game, but Avant scored five more to put the Lynx back up by 12 at 52-40.

The 'Roos would twice cut it to a 10 point game, including a pair of free throws by Brittany Stepanski to make it 56-46 with 7:38 left but Rhodes used a 12-2 run to put the game away, going on top 68-48 with 1:16 left to play. The 'Roos would get the final four points of the game to make it a 68-52 final.

Kime finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists and Stepanski scored 14 and grabbed five boards to lead the 'Roos. Riley finished with nine points and six rebounds as the 'Roos shot just 34% from the field and committed 21 turnovers in the game.

Avant led all scorers with 27 points and added four boards, four assists, and four steals and Daniels added 16 points and six rebounds. Dy'Nelle Todman scored 11 in the win for the Lynx.
