'Roo Women's Hoops Pulls Away for Win Over TLU

The Austin College women's basketball team got 21 points from Shayna Clardy and closed the game on a 23-5 run to earn a 62-50 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Saturday night, bringing the team's record to 2-2 overall this season. 

Jacqui Nickell scored four early points to put the 'Roos on top 9-5, but TLU rallied back to take an 11-9 lead with 13:11 left in the first half. Clardy scored five quick points and Christina Kime scored four to help the 'Roos grab a 20-19 edge with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter. 

Two baskets by Erin Riley, a three from Nickell, and another bucket by Kime pushed it to a 31-25 margin with 3:27 on the clock. Katy Scott scored four straight for the Bulldogs to end the half and send things into the locker room with the 'Roos leading 33-29. 

Chasmin Betters scored four points to square things up early in the second half but Clardy scored 11 points during a 13-6 run to push the Austin College lead to 46-39 with 13:53 left to play. The Bulldogs chipped away at the Austin College lead but five points from Kime along with a three from Nickell and a layup by Riley put the lead in double figures at 56-46 and the 'Roos would cruise from there. 

Clardy knocked down 5-of-6 three pointers on her way to 21 points as four 'Roos reached double figures. Kime had 13 points and added six assists, six rebounds and three steals, and Nickell finished with 12 points and five boards. Riley added 10 points and Brooke Melton grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. 

Betters scored 19 points and had nine rebounds and three assists to lead the Bulldogs in all three categories, while Italy Taylor added 13 points and Scott had 10 to go along with seven rebounds in the loss. 

Austin College is home again on November 28 at 6:00 p.m. against the University of Texas-Dallas.
