Hot Shooting Lifts 'Roo Women's Hoops Past UD

Angeleena Young knocked down seven three pointers as the Austin College women's basketball team knocked down 14-of-30 from deep in a 70-58 victory over the University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon in Hughey Gym. The win is the second straight for Austin College and brings the team's record to 3-20 overall and 3-11 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. 

The 'Roos fell behind early on a pair of Dallas three pointers, but an 8-0 run with threes from Young and Lexi Beeson put Austin College ahead 11-6 with 15:23 left in the opening half. Another three from Young made it a 14-8 game, but the Crusaders responded with an 8-0 run of their own to grab a 16-14 lead with 12:58 on the clock. The 'Roos answered right back with Young hitting three more threes to put Austin College ahead 25-16, and a trey from Nikki Kincaid made it 32-22 with 3:21 left in the half. 

The margin would remain 10 points the rest of the way the 'Roos took a 36-26 lead into the break. Young knocked down six three pointers in the first half, finishing the opening period with 18 points. 

The Crusaders cut it to six points to open the second half, and after a Kersti Marusich three extended the lead back to 11 at 41-30 with 17:58 left to play, Dallas narrowed the gap to five points at 43-38 with 12:08 on the clock. Marusich answered with five straight points to make it a 10 point margin once again, and the lead grew to 15 on another Beeson three and a layup by Young to make it 54-39 midway through the half. 

The 'Roos were able to maintain a double-digit margin for almost all of the game's final 10 minutes, with the Crusaders cutting it to nine just once with 1:34 on the clock, but the 'Roos knocked down three of four free throws over the final minute to make it a 70-58 final. 

Young finished with 23 points to lead all scorers and Marusich added 17 points, including a 3-of-4 performance from three, and 12 rebounds. Christina Kime added 13 points and seven assists in the win. 

Kylie Yoshimura scored 19 points and added seven assists and Brooke Hagemann added 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Crusaders. 

Austin College is back in action next weekend for its final two regular season games of the year. The 'Roos host Southwestern on Friday and Trinity on Saturday.
