'Roo Women's Hoops Unable to Hold Off Sewanee

The Austin College women's basketball team led Sewanee for most of the game, but the 'Roos were unable to hold off the Tigers down the stretch, falling 52-44 on Saturday evening in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 1-19 overall and 1-10 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 'Roos got out to a blazing start, jumping on top 8-0 in the first five minutes behind threes from Angeleena Young and Christina Kime and pushing the lead to 18-3 with 10:01 left before halftime. A basket from Allison Taylor on a feed from Kime gave the 'Roos their largest lead at 20-4 with 7:49 left, but the Tigers would start to creep back into the game thanks largely to 10 straight points from Dana Middleton in the midst of an 18-4 run to trim the margin to 24-22 with 2:43 left in the first half.

However, Kersti Marusich and Young would each hit threes to send Austin College into the break leading 30-22 as the 'Roos knocked down five first half three pointers.

Five quick points from Marusich to open the second half made it a 35-25 game with just over 15 minutes left to play, but once again Middleton took control for the Tigers, scoring six straight to cap off an 8-0 run that cut it to a 35-33 game with 12:04 left on the clock. Kime would stop the run with a jumper, but a Clarissa Medley three pulled the Tigers to within one, and two Middleton free throws and a basket by Kayla Sewell put Sewanee on top 40-37 with 6:21 remaining.

Kime would give the lead back to Austin College with 3:44 to play on a three pointer to make it 42-41, and Lexi Beeson answered a Sewanee basket to keep the 'Roos on top 44-43 with 3:03 left in the game. However, that's the last time Austin College would lead, as Sewanee would close the game on a 9-0 run, getting five more points from Middleton over that span to hand the 'Roos the loss.

Marusich finished with a team-high 14 for Austin College and added five rebounds and Kime finished with 12 points, five boards and five assists. Young hit three treys on her way to 11 points for the 'Roos.

Middleton came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points and added five rebounds and Sewell finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots to pace Sewanee.

Austin College heads out on the road next week when they take on Colorado College and Hendrix College in another pair of SCAC contests.
