'Roos Fall Twice at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader at Southwestern University on Saturday to wrap up the regular season, as the Pirates topped the 'Roos 3-0 in game one and 7-2 in game two. Austin College will now head to the SCAC Tournament with an overall record of 18-20.

Southwestern struck in the bottom of the first of game one to take a 1-0 lead on a base hit by Sophia Ytuarte, and that would wind up being all the cushion the Pirates would need as the 'Roos were limited to three hits in the 3-0 defeat. The Pirates scored another run in the second to make it 2-0, and a third run came home in the fifth to cap off the scoring. Alexus Johnson took the loss for Austin College, giving up three runs on 10 hits in a complete game performance. 

Elizabeth Preston, Carrie Johnson, and Hannah King each had a hit for the 'Roos, while Meghan McCarthy went 3-for-4 with an RBI double to lead Southwestern. Madison Vela earned the win for the Pirates, throwing a three hit, complete game shutout.

The Pirates scored first again in game two, this time plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but the 'Roos got their first run of the day on a Hailie Swiatkowski solo homer in the top of the third to cut it to a 2-1 game. Southwestern tacked on two more runs in the fourth, making it 4-1, before King got one run back for Austin College with an RBI single to score Tori Fowler in the top of the sixth. 

However, Southwestern pushed three runs across in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-2 and put the game away. Swiatkowski absorbed the loss for Austin College, giving up four runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings of action while also going 1-for-2 with a home run at the dish. King and Johnson each had a pair of hits for the 'Roos, while Jodi Glenn-Millhouse and Riley Glenn-Millhouse each went 3-for-4 for the Pirates.

Austin College is now headed to the SCAC Tournament in Seguin next weekend, with the team's first round opponent still to be determined.
