No. 25 Southwestern Takes Two From 'Roos

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team fell in both halves of its twinbill against No. 25-ranked Southwestern University on Friday evening, dropping game one 9-0 and game two 7-0. The 'Roos are now 1-30 overall and 1-19 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Southwestern got a 2-run homer from Katie Bricarell in the first inning to go ahead 2-0, and that's how things would stand heading into the fifth. However, in the fifth inning the Pirates exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Bricarell to make it a 9-0 game, and Austin College was unable to generate any offense in the bottom half of the inning.

Jordan Proctor took the loss for Austin College, giving up nine runs – five earned – on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work, and Mari Prazak doubled for the only hit of the game for the 'Roos. Bricarell finished 2-for-3 with six RBI to pace Southwestern.

In game two, things were scoreless through the first two innings before a pair of errors led to three runs for Southwestern. The Pirates would score one run in each of the next four innings, including a solo homer from Bricarell in the sixth, to make it a 7-0 game and once again the Austin College offense was stymied by a strong Southwestern pitching performance.

Marisa Duke and Valerie Nixon each had a hit for Austin College as the 'Roos were limited to a pair of singles in the game, while Ashley Elliott absorbed the loss, giving up three runs – all unearned – on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Overall, just two of the seven runs given up by Austin College were earned as the 'Roos committed five errors as a team.

Austin College and Southwestern will look to wrap up their series on Sunday with games set to begin at 12:00 p.m., weather and field conditions permitting.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
