'Roo Softball Splits with Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Austin College softball team split its series-opening doubleheader at Centenary on Saturday, falling 4-2 in game one before pulling out a 3-2 victory in extra innings in game two. The 'Roos are now 4-16 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

In game one, Austin College jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double by Cassidy McDaris, and that remained the score until the fifth inning. That's when Centenary would plate all four of their runs, first scoring on a wild pitch and then taking advantage of a pair of Austin College errors to score three more.

Austin College would be unable to counter, falling 4-2 in the series opener. Kat Wright took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs (one earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Beth Massey went 2-for-3 to lead the 'Roos at the plate, and McDaris finished 1-for-3.

McDaris got the 'Roos going early in game two as well, with an RBI single making it a 1-0 game after the first inning. Centenary squared things up in the second, but Emily Low notched an RBI in the fourth to put Austin College ahead 2-1. However, the lead would be short-lived as the Ladies plated the tying run in the bottom half of the inning.

That's how things remained through the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Jordan Proctor singled home Abby Ratzer to give the 'Roos a 3-2 lead and Tori Herrera shut the door on the Ladies in the bottom half of the inning to earn the victory. Herrera allowed two runs on eight hits in a complete game effort.

Proctor finished the game going 4-for-4 to pace the 'Roos at the plate, and Courtney Gonzales went 2-for-4.

Austin College and Centenary wrap up their four game series on Sunday in Shreveport.
