Softball Drops Two to Millsaps

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team fell 19-2 in game one of its doubleheader against visiting Millsaps College before taking the Majors to extra innings in game two, ultimately falling 6-2 in eight innings. The 'Roos are now 1-7 overall this season.

In game one, the Majors took advantage of three hit batters and an error to plate seven first inning runs and jump out to a big 7-0 lead, and the lead would grow to 9-0 after two more runs came across in the third. Austin College plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, with Beth Massey and Ashley Mayorga both crossing the plate to make it 9-2.

However, Millsaps would tack five more runs on in the fourth to make it a 14-2 game, and five runners would cross in the fifth to end the game via the run-rule. Massey finished the game 1-for-3, as Austin College was limited to one hit in the game.

In game two, Millsaps again struck first, but this time it was a single run in the fourth to put the Majors ahead 1-0. The lead grew to 2-0 in the top of the sixth, but Austin College took advantage of an error and a passed ball to plate a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and square things up at 2 runs apiece. Massey and Jordan Proctor each scored in the inning for the 'Roos.

The score remained 2-2 through the seventh, but in the first extra frame the Majors loaded the bases and Megan Murray's double down the left field line plated three runs to put Millsaps on top. Murray would later come around to score to make it a 6-2 game, and Austin College was unable to counter in the bottom of the inning.

Emily Low went 1-for-3, as Austin College was again held to one hit in the game. Tori Herrera went the distance in the loss, striking out seven batters and scattering eight hits.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
