AC Softball Drops Pair to Southwestern

The Austin College softball team fell twice to Southwestern University in its first doubleheader of the weekend against the SCAC rival Pirates, dropping game one 4-0 before losing 6-5 in a seventh inning heartbreaker in game two. The 'Roos are now 13-13 overall and 3-7 in SCAC play with the losses.

In game one, the Pirates scored one run in the second and added another tally in the fourth, before tacking on two runs in the sixth to make it a 4-0 game. Austin College was limited to four hits and was unable to get anything going offensively to counter. Tori Herrera took the loss, surrendering four runs - three earned - on 10 hits in a complete game effort. Herrera also struck out six batters.

In the second game, Austin College struck first with a run in the top of the second before the Pirates answered back to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning. Southwestern plated two more in the fifth and another two in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead, but Austin College battled back with four runs in the top of the seventh to square things up.

Delaney England, Sophia Hernandez, Raquel Vara, and Kat Wright all drove in a run in the inning as Austin College pulled even with the Pirates, but in the bottom half of the inning, Southwestern's Karly Pustka came up with a walk-off RBI single to hand the 'Roos the one run loss.

Wright took the loss in relief, surrendering three runs on five hits in 1.0 inning of work. Lauren Mara went 3-for-3 to lead Austin College offensively.
