SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team swept its doubleheader with Schreiner University on Monday night, winning 10-2 in five innings in game one and getting a dramatic, walk-of home run from Jaylin Clevenger in the 10th inning for a 5-3 win in game two. The 'Roos are now 12-10 overall and 2-4 in SCAC play with the wins.

In the first game, the 'Roos and Mountaineers went scoreless through two and a half innings before Austin College erupted for four runs in the third, with Emily Low and Kylee Fowler each driving in a run. Schreiner put one run across in the fourth, but Austin College got the run back when Briana Hernandez drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-1.

The Mountaineers cut it to 5-2, but Sophia Hernandez belted a two-run homer and Delaney England, Fowler, and Lauren Mara each drove in a run during the fifth inning to make it a 10-2, walk-off victory via the mercy rule. Sophia Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored and also picked up the victory in the circle, tossing a complete game while surrendering two runs, only one earned. The victory was the 50th career coaching win for Austin College head coach Andrea Vangoss.

Schreiner struck in the top of the first and added a run in the second to take a 2-0 lead in game two, but a two-run double from Sophia Hernandez tied things up at 2-2 heading into the third inning. That would remain the score through the seventh, and neither team was able to plate a run in either of the first two extra frames.

In the top of the 10th the teams went to international tiebreaker rules, and Schreiner was able to put a run across to go ahead 3-2, but with Fowler and Sophia Hernandez aboard, Clevenger blasted a three-run, walk-off homer to centerfield to give the 'Roos the victory.

Tori Herrera earned the victory, striking out 11 batters while throwing 10.0 complete innings, surrendering just five hits and only one earned run. Sophia Hernandez went 3-for-4 to lead Austin College offensively.

The 'Roos and Mountaineers will wrap up their four game set tomorrow at Old Settlers Park with game one set to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
