Softball Wraps Up Spring Trip with Split

The Austin College softball team finished up its spring break trip to Florida with a split in its final two games, falling to St. Joseph's (Me.) before topping Wesleyan (Ga.). The 'Roos fell 4-2 in extra innings to St. Joseph's, before topping Wesleyan 5-3, bringing Austin College's record to 10-10 overall.

In the first game of the day, the 'Roos fell behind 1-0 in the first after an error opened the door for a St. Joseph's run, but Austin College came back to square things up on an RBI single by Raquel Vara in the third. That would remain the score through the seventh, forcing an extra frame, and in the eighth St. Joseph's plated three runs to go ahead 4-1.

Austin College got one run back in the bottom half of the inning but would come up short in the comeback bid. Tori Herrera surrendered four runs - two earned - on seven hits in a complete game performance, striking out seven batters in the loss. Vara finished the game 2-for-4 to lead the 'Roos offensively.

In the second game of the day against Wesleyan, Jaylin Clevenger and Delaney England each drove home a run in the second and another run came home in the third to make it 3-0. Wesleyan plated two in the bottom of the inning to cut it to a one run game, but an error opened the door for two more Austin College runs in the fourth, with Briana Hernandez driving one in with an RBI single.

Wesleyan would add one run in the fifth to cut it to a 5-3 game, but that's as close as things would get. Katherine Wright earned the complete game victory and became just the third Austin College softball player to strike out at least 10 batters in a game, whiffing 10 to earn the victory. Hernandez went 3-for-4 to lead the 'Roos on offense.
