'Roo Softball Tops Schreiner to Open SCAC Tournament

The Austin College softball team set a new program single season record with its 18th victory in the opening round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, topping Schreiner 4-2 on Friday. The 'Roos will move on to play tournament host and top overall seed Texas Lutheran at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.

The 'Roos got on the board in the top of the second when Brian Hernandez singled home Emily Low, and a Mary Whitworth RBI in the third made it a 2-0 game. The 'Roos plated two more in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0 on a two run double by Mallory Rossmann, and Austin College was able to hold on despite a pair of runs in the late innings by Schreiner.

The Mountaineers put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Rossmann fielded a grounder to third and got the force out to secure the win. Sophia Hernandez allowed just three hits in earning her ninth pitching victory of the year, which was also her 15th complete game of the season.

Rossmann finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Whitworth, Low, and Lacy Price each had a pair of hits in the victory.
