'Roo Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Dallas

The Austin College softball team swept its doubleheader against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival the University of Dallas on Friday, taking game one 6-2 before holding on for a 2-1 win in game two. The 'Roos are now 16-21 overall and 7-15 in SCAC play.

In game one, the 'Roos fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first before plating four runs in the second to grab a 4-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two run homer by Briana Hernandez, her third homer of the season. Mary Whitworth also doubled and scored a run in the inning. The Crusades got a run back with a solo homer from Erin Begle in the top of the third to make it 4-2, but Mallory Rossmann and Sophia Hernandez would both cross the plate to push it to a 6-2 margin in the fifth.

Sophia Hernandez went the distance to earn the win, striking out 10 batters while allowing two runs on six hits, and Briana Hernandez finished 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Whitworth finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored in the win.

In game two, Victoria Herrera tossed a complete game and struck out 10 batters to become the first Austin College softball player to surpass 100 strikeouts in a season. Austin College plated two runs in the third, and that would be the entire cushion Herrera would need to earn the win. Taylor Steelman and Rossmann had consecutive RBI doubles in the inning to grab the 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders would plate one run in the top of the seventh, but the potentially game-tying run would be caught trying to score from third when Rachel Ramos hit Whitworth with the cutoff throw, and Whitworth turned and caught the runner at the plate to end the game at 2-1.

Herrera surrendered just one run on just one hit, as she took the no-hitter into the top of the seventh to earn the victory. Steelman finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Emily Low went 2-for-3 in the victory.

Austin College and Dallas will hook up again tomorrow to close out the regular season with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m., with the 'Roos celebrating Senior Day prior to the beginning of game one.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
