Softball Swept in Doubleheader at Southwestern

The Austin College softball team dropped a pair of games against Southwestern University on Saturday, falling 10-2 in game one and 10-6 in game two. The 'Roos fall to 13-20 overall with the pair of losses.

Austin College jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning in game one, with Sophia Hernandez blasting a two run homer to put the 'Roos on top early. That remained the score until the third, when Southwestern plated one run to make it 2-1, but the Pirates would exploded for seven runs in the fourth to make it an 8-2 game. Two more runs came home in the fifth to end the game at 10-2 via the run-rule.

Four 'Roos had one hit each, with Hernandez going 1-for-2 and also taking the loss on the mound, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits in 3.2 innings of work.

The 'Roos fell behind 3-0 after two innings in game two before getting on the board with a pair of runs in the third, with Briana Hernandez driving home a pair on a single to make it a 3-2 game. Southwestern would add two in the bottom half of the inning, and then two more in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-2 heading into the fifth.

Sophia Hernandez hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth to make it a 7-3 game, and the 'Roos plated three runs in the sixth to cut it to a 7-6 game. Emily Low's two run double highlighted the inning and pulled the 'Roos to within one, but Southwestern would counter with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away at 10-6.

Low finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Taylor Steelman and Sophia Hernandez each scored twice in the loss. Victoria Herrera went the distance on the mound, surrendering 10 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits with seven strikeouts.
