'Roo Softball Splits with Schreiner

The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with Schreiner on Friday night, falling 6-2 in game one before picking up a 5-1 victory in game two. The 'Roos are now 8-9 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the split.

In game one the 'Roos fell in a 3-0 hole after the top of the first, with a pair of errors opening the door for a big start for Schreiner. Austin College got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Taylor Steelman doubled and then came home on a sacrifice fly by Sophia Hernandez, but the Mountaineers added two more runs in the fourth, once again taking advantage of Austin College errors to go ahead 5-1.

The 'Roos cut it to 5-2 when Mary Whitworth doubled and then came home on a Mallory Rossmann double, but Schreiner would add one more run in the sixth to make it 6-2 and Austin College was unable to overcome the deficit.

Sophia Hernandez took the loss, surrendering six runs on just five hits, as Austin College committed seven errors in the loss. Steelman, Rossmann, and Emily Low each had two hits in the game for Austin College.

In game two, Schreiner took a 1-0 lead in the second before Austin College got an RBI triple from Sophia Hernandez, who came home on a single by Briana Hernandez to make it 2-1. That would be all the run support Victoria Herrera would need, and the 'Roos would add three more runs in the sixth to put the game away. Sophia Hernandez had two RBI in the sixth and Briana Hernandez added an RBI double in the inning.

Herrera allowed just one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work, striking out six in the victory. Sophia Hernandez went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Briana Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Steelman went 2-for-4 in the win.

Austin College and Schreiner are scheduled to finish up the weekend series with a pair of games tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
