SAN ANTONIO, Tx - The Doubles Duo of Cedric Ambulo/Josh Granberry accomplished a feat that has not happened for the 'Roos in Division III Program History.
The tandem advanced out of the Round of 16 in the Championship Doubles "A-Draw" with a win over UT-Tyler's Cunningham/McCarthy; the same team that beat out Kenneth Hardy/Erik Meendsen only a day earlier in the qualifying round.
The Kangaroo pairing was the only team out of 6 to eliminate a team from UT-Tyler in the first round, and one of only 6 teams to advance to the second round not named "Trinity" or "UT-Tyler."
Two rain delays washed out all of the "B-Doubles" and the remainder of "C-Singles" competitions, but all of the "A-Draw" and "A-Draw Consolation" matches were able to finish around the prolongments.
All four 'Roos in the "A-Draw" Round of 64 met their makers and were relegated to the back draw, but Josh Granberry had an epic match against a UT-Dallas opponent that included two tiebreakers. The first set went to Granberry by way of a 12-point set tiebreaker, and the second set came a little easier to Ravula of UT-D 6-2. But the match-decided super-tiebreaker was "must-see TV," ending in a grueling 14-12 decision in favor of the Comets.
Granberry and Hardy were both able to get wins in the consolation bracket, while Ambulo and Meendsen both fell to tough opponents from UT-Tyler. Meendsen started to make a comeback by dictating the point against Jack Puckey, while Ambulo started out slow in the first set against Alex Free.
Ambulo would find his groove against the hard-hitting Patriot Tennis Player, but Free would play near perfect tennis in the match-deciding super tie-breaker.
When the dust settled, AC had played 4 match-deciding super-tiebreakers and 1 set tiebreaker on Day 2 out of 8 matches.
