'Roos Battle to 1-1 Draw in Season Opener

SHERMAN, Texas –The Austin College men's soccer team battled visiting McMurry University to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Friday evening, as the 'Roos opened up their 2018 campaign at the Dr. Jack R. Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex.

McMurry controlled possession for much of the first half, but neither team was able to find the net in the game's first 45 minutes. The War Hawks held a 7-to-5 shot advantage at halftime. In the second half, the 'Roos became the aggressors, out-shooting McMurry 13-6, and it paid off in the 63rdminute when Juan Ramirez found Phillip Le at the top of the box, with Le blasting home his first goal of the season to make it 1-0.

It looked like that's how things would remain, but the War Hawks broke through with just under eight minutes to play on a goal by Jesus Sanchez to square things up and force extra time. Both teams had chances in the two overtime periods, but neither side managed to create the golden goal, resulting in a draw after 110 minutes of action.

The 'Roos ended the game with a 23-to-16 shot edge, with Joseph Khalaf making a pair of saves while McMurry's Franciso Avilez stopped five shots.

Austin College is back in action on Sunday when they host Sul Ross at 12:00 p.m.
