Men's Soccer Routs Centenary to Close Regular Season

SHERMAN, Texas – Thomas Quick and Jack Wheaton each made their Senior Night a memorable one, as both players scored a hat trick and the Austin College men's soccer team topped Centenary 7-0 in the final regular season game of 2017. The 'Roos are now 8-6-4 overall and 6-5-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play as they head to next week's conference tournament.

Austin College came out strong and put pressure on the Centenary defense from the start, but the 'Roos were unable to break through until the 26th minute when Quick collected a feed from Garrett Matacale and scored to make it 1-0. Wheaton got his first goal of the game less than two minutes later, beating Centenary keeper Kaleb Behm top right for a two-goal cushion. Wheaton would score again in the 30th minute to give the 'Roos a 3-0 halftime lead.

It didn't take long for the lead to grow to 4-0 as Quick scored on a pass from Matacale just over a minute into the second half, and Matacale got into the scoring with a goal of his own in the 66th minute to make it a 5-0 game. Matacale picked up his fourth assist of the game on Quick's third goal, which came in the 69th minute, and Wheaton capped the scoring in the 71st minute on an assist from Levin Dyson.

Austin College dominated play throughout, out-shooting Centenary 32-8, including an 18-0 edge in shots on goal. Joseph Khalaf and Juan Rodriguez combined for the shutout for Austin College, and Behm made 11 saves for the Gents.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
