Golden Goal Gives 'Roos 2-1 Overtime Victory

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College men's soccer team found itself in overtime for the third straight match, but after two straight draws it only took 34 seconds this time for Juan Ramirez to deliver a golden goal and a 2-1 victory over Texas Lutheran on Sunday. The 'Roos are now 4-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

After a scoreless first half, Phillip Le got the 'Roos on the scoreboard first in the 59th minute of action when he collected a pass along the endline from Thomas Quick and punched it into the back of the net from right in front of the goal mouth. The tally was Le's SCAC-best fifth of the season. Texas Lutheran would equalize 15 minutes later, however, with Nathan Sevigny finding the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game.

That's how regulation would end, but Austin College wasted no time in the first extra frame. Ben Sloan carried the ball down the left sideline before crossing to Le, who found Ramirez streaking through the box. Ramirez quickly put the ball in the back of the net to give Austin College the 2-1 win.

The 'Roos held a 16-12 shot advantage, with Joseph Khalaf making two saves while TLU keeper Brendan Soto made three stops.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
